Check that there's fresh fuel, the fuel valve is open, and the choke is set correctly for a cold start. Check the oil level: many generators, especially inverter models, won't start when the oil is low. On electric-start units, check the battery.

That usually points to the automatic changeover switch (ATS) rather than the generator itself. We diagnose changeover faults and tell you exactly what's wrong. Any work on your home's fixed wiring must be done by a registered electrician.
Follow your manual. As a rough guide, portable generators need an oil change about every 100 running hours, and standby diesel generators need a service at least once a year, or more often if they run a lot during load-shedding. Regular servicing is the best way to make sure it starts when you need it.

No. Generators produce carbon monoxide, which you can't see or smell. Always run them outdoors, well away from doors and windows. If anyone feels dizzy or nauseous near a running generator, switch it off and get to fresh air.
